What is Region Staff
College? "Region Staff College (RSC) is designed to prepare
selected mid-career CAP senior member for positions of leadership at squadron
level and to help prepare them to be staff officers at group, wing and region
levels." In addition, it will enhance the member's understanding of the Civil
Air Patrol organization at policy-making levels. It does this through top
quality professional development with topics on leadership, communication and
management.
What will I learn? The
NERSC curriculum includes study in a wide array of areas
including:
- Motivation
- Human
Relations
- Team
Dynamics
- Interpersonal communications
- Written
communications
- Goal
Setting
- Problem
Solving
- Leadership
- Management
- Principals of organization
- CAP
management at the region level.
NERSC is taught by a variety of highly
qualified individuals including: CAP commanders, Air Force instructors, CAP
members who teach professionally, and CAP members who are executives in their
civilian careers. Each staff member is carefully screened and selected based on
their experience.
How will attending NERSC benefit
me? NERSC will help you perform your command and staff responsibilities
more professionally and efficiently. As you know, leading volunteers is uniquely
challenging, requiring CAP commanders and supervisors to balance their member's
work and family needs with the needs of the unit. Region Staff College can help
enhance your leadership abilities. You will also develop a network of friends
across the region that can make you more effective in the future.
Will attending Region Staff College
advance my CAP career? NERSC is a requirement for completing Level
IV of the Senior Member Professional Development Program and a requirement for
promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, the highest non-appointed rank in Civil Air
Patrol.
Will attending Region Staff College
help me at work? Absolutely! The skills taught at NERSC are in
great demand by employers in all industries. Look at the help wanted section of
your local newspaper and you'll see ads from employers looking for people with
management and communications skills - the same skills you will learn at staff
college! Some companies will pay the cost for their employees to attend
management courses - check with your employer to see if they will pay for your
attendance or count the week as professional training or continuing education.
You can request a letter or more information about NERSC from the Director to
give your employer.
Where is NERSC held, and how long does
it last? NERSC lasts 7 days and is held in-residence at the NCO
Academy at McGuire AFB, New Jersey. The 2005 college will run from Saturday 9
July to Saturday 16 July.
Am I eligible to
attend? To be eligible to attend NERSC, you must be an active CAP
senior member who has completed Level III in the Senior Member Professional
Development Program. Requests for waivers to the senior training requirement may
be sent to the Director at the address above.
How do I get to Region Staff
College? You must provide your own transportation. You may come by
private or CAP vehicle. Many students car pool. Talk to your wing Professional
Development Officer to see whom in your area is attending. You may fly personal
or corporate aircraft into many local airports. Contact your LO well ahead of
time if you wish to land at McGuire AFB.
Is it really a great
buy? Your $70 registration fee includes all course material,
reception, picnic, dining out, daily newsletters, and access to professional
staff. Billeting and meals are paid
separately. Plan on paying $24.50 per day for billeting, and approximately $5 to
$8 a day for meals at the new dining hall, which is within walking distance from the VOQ.
